Summer in Pakistan is no joke. When temperatures climb above 40 degrees Celsius in cities like Lahore, Karachi, and Multan, your hair takes a serious beating. The combination of intense heat, humidity, dust, sweat, and hard water creates a perfect storm for damaged, dull, and frizzy hair. But with the right care routine, you can keep your hair healthy and manageable even in the hottest months.

Keep Your Scalp Clean But Don't Overwash

In summer, sweat and oil build up on your scalp much faster than in winter. This can clog hair follicles and lead to dandruff, itching, and even hair fall. Most people need to wash their hair at least three to four times a week during summer in Pakistan.

However, washing your hair every single day can strip away natural oils that protect your hair. These oils are actually good for your strands. So find a balance. If your scalp feels too oily or itchy, wash it. But try not to make it a daily habit unless your hair type truly demands it.

Use lukewarm or cool water for washing. Hot water opens the hair cuticle and makes your hair more prone to breakage and frizz. Cool water rinses are especially refreshing in summer and they help seal the cuticle, leaving hair smoother and shinier.

Oil Your Hair Regularly

Pakistani mothers and grandmothers have been saying this for generations and they were right. Regular oiling is one of the best things you can do for your hair in summer. Oil creates a protective layer on the hair shaft that shields it from heat, dust, and pollution.

Coconut oil, olive oil, and almond oil are all excellent choices. Apply oil at least once or twice a week. Warm the oil slightly before applying and massage it gently into your scalp using your fingertips. Leave it on for at least two hours before washing or keep it overnight for deeper nourishment.

Protect Your Hair from Direct Sunlight

The UV rays from the sun damage your hair just like they damage your skin. Prolonged sun exposure breaks down the protein structure of your hair which leads to dryness, brittleness, and color fading if your hair is color treated.

When you step outside in peak summer hours, cover your hair with a light cotton scarf or dupatta. This is something Pakistani women have traditionally done and it works really well. It blocks direct sunlight and also keeps dust away from your hair.

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, consider using a leave-in hair conditioner or a light hair serum before heading out. These products add a layer of moisture that helps protect your strands from drying out.

Stay Hydrated and Eat Right

This one gets ignored too often. Your hair is a reflection of what is happening inside your body. If you are dehydrated in summer, your scalp becomes dry and your hair becomes brittle. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, aim for at least eight to ten glasses minimum.

Include foods in your diet that support hair health. Eggs, lentils, chickpeas, spinach, and seasonal fruits like mangoes, which are rich in vitamins, are all great for hair. Mangoes in particular are loaded with vitamin A and C which support scalp health and collagen production.

Avoid excessive junk food and sugary drinks during summer. These can trigger inflammation and hormonal changes that worsen hair fall.

Reduce Heat Styling

Summer is already putting your hair through enough heat stress from the outside. Adding more heat through blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons on top of that is a recipe for serious damage.

Try to embrace your natural hair texture during summer. If your hair is wavy or curly, let it be. If you need to dry your hair, use a towel gently and then let it air dry. Do not rub your hair aggressively with a towel because wet hair is very fragile and breaks easily.

If you absolutely must use heat styling tools, always apply a heat protectant beforehand and use the lowest temperature setting that gets the job done.

Aloe vera is another amazing option. Fresh aloe vera gel applied directly to the scalp and hair provides hydration, reduces itching, and soothes heat-related inflammation. Pakistan has plenty of aloe vera plants and using fresh gel is always better than packaged versions.

Besan or gram flour mixed with yogurt and a little lemon juice also makes a great scalp cleansing mask. It removes buildup and excess oil without stripping the hair completely.

Be Careful with Sweat and Chlorine

If you swim in a pool during summer, rinse your hair immediately after. Chlorine is extremely harsh on hair and it strips away moisture very quickly. Wet your hair with clean water before entering the pool so it absorbs less chlorine.

Sweat is also something to manage carefully. After any outdoor activity or exercise, try not to let sweat sit on your scalp for too long. It can create an acidic environment that weakens hair roots over time. A light rinse or even just washing your scalp with water can help.

Trim Your Hair Regularly

Keep It Loose
